Is Papaya Punch indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

The two parents

Papaya is the fruit side. Leafly describes it as an indica-dominant hybrid that Nirvana Seeds bred as its take on a Mango strain, crossing Citral #13 with Ice #2, with tree-fruit, tropical and apricot flavors; Nirvana sells it with medium THC (13–18%).^2,14 The Papaya in Papaya Punch is Oni Seed Co’s, which SeedFinder lists as clone-only and as a selection from Nirvana Seeds’ Papaya.^6,9,15

Purple Punch is the other half: Leafly calls it the union of two indica-dominant classics, Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple, smelling of grape candy and blueberry muffins.³ Weedmaps says the original cut is commonly credited to Hawaii’s Supernova Gardens, from where it spread to California growers such as the Jungle Boys, and that plants carrying the name do not always match that cut.¹⁰ Granddaddy Purple, its parent, was popularized in 2003 by Ken Estes, according to Leafly.¹⁶

Oni Seed Co

SeedFinder describes Oni Seed Co as a group of craft breeders, growers and hash makers, founded mainly by its owners Harrrypalms and Oninoodles, and lists 43 of its strains, Papaya Punch among them.⁶ Leafly credits Harry Palms of Bloom Seed Co with the original Tropicana Cookies and says Oni Seed Co of Colorado made its second generation, Tropicana Cookies F2; SeedFinder lists Oni Seed Co’s Tropaya Punch as (Purple Punch × Papaya) × Tropicana Cookies F2.^12,21

Which Papaya?

Papaya itself comes in more than one version. SeedFinder notes that Nirvana Seeds’ current Papaya, the Citral × Ice cross Leafly describes, was released as feminized seed around 2022, and warns against confusing it with a legacy Papaya bred from Jack Herer × Skunk #1.^2,15 SeedFinder’s family tree for Papaya Punch names Oni Seed Co’s Papaya as the parent and traces it back to Nirvana’s; the earliest Papaya Punch result in our lab data is from 2018.^9,22

How indica is it?

Most descriptions lean indica, but Oni Seed Co’s entry on SeedFinder gives no split. Leafly calls Papaya Punch a potent indica-hybrid and rates it mostly calming, AllBud lists 60% indica / 40% sativa, and the grower quoted by the Oklahoma Gazette called it indica-dominant.^1,4,19 Crop King calls its feminized seed a balanced hybrid and Rocket Seeds lists 50% sativa / 50% indica, while the Oni Seed Co description on SeedFinder speaks of a sativa-like flower on a thick-stemmed, indica-like plant.^7,23,24

Seeds, clones and look-alike names

Oni Seed Co’s Papaya Punch is listed as regular seed: SeedFinder gives about 67 days of flowering and says it was never available as feminized seed, although the description it carries calls it a feminized cross.^6,7 Feminized seeds sold under the name by Crop King and Rocket Seeds carry identical specifications, and Weedmaps’ strain page says Papaya Punch is unavailable as seeds or clones.^8,23,24

Not every Papaya × Purple Punch cross carries the name: SeedFinder lists Paradise Punch, from Clone Only Strains, as Nirvana Seeds’ Papaya × Purple Punch.¹⁵

What our lab data adds

The name travels beyond flower. Besides the 92 flower tests on this site, state lab records hold 51 concentrate tests under the exact name.²² Our matching also excluded 26 results under near-miss names, none of them flower: 20 were vapes or gummies sold under the name, and 2 were labelled "Purple Papaya Punch".²²
