Why it spread

It borrowed two reputations. Headset called Purple Punch a hot new strain and ranked it the third best-selling strain of 2019, and Papaya was a Nirvana Seeds fruit line; Leafly’s editors describe Papaya Punch as combining favorites.^2,7,11

Breeders kept working with it. SeedFinder lists ten direct descendants from eight breeders, among them Mint Mango, which Leafly calls a collaboration between Umami and Oni Seed Co, and Papaya 99 from MrSoul of Brothers Grimm; one, Pot Tartz (Papaya Punch × Garlic Breath), is credited to ALTVM, the same name as the grower of the 2019 Oklahoma batch.^3,4,17,18 Oni Seed Co itself crossed the same two parents with Tropicana Cookies F2 to make Tropaya Punch.¹⁹

The disputed parts of the story

• Breeder: SeedFinder, GrowDiaries, Herb and the 2019 Oklahoma grower name Oni Seed Co; Weedmaps calls the origin unknown, and Leafly and AllBud name no breeder (see genetics).^{1,3,4,20,21,22,23}
• Seed type: SeedFinder lists Oni Seed Co’s seeds as regular and never feminized, yet the description it carries calls the strain a feminized cross; feminized seeds are sold by Crop King and Rocket Seeds.^3,24,25,26
• Which Papaya: SeedFinder traces the parent to Oni Seed Co’s Papaya, a selection from Nirvana Seeds’ Papaya, which itself exists in a legacy and a current version.^14,27
• Effects: Leafly and AllBud describe it as calming to sedating; the Oni Seed Co description on SeedFinder speaks of energy and joy.^1,3,23
